New York City is an exciting metropolis and has something for everyone. This is where you can see several of the United States’ best known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty. The Big Apple is known for its fashion, food, museums and live entertainment.

You can easily fly into New York City from almost any destination and land at one of the two major International airports, JFK and LaGuardia. From there you can easily get around or get to your destination by car hire, taxi (these are the world-famous yellow cabs you see in all the movies) or by public transport. With a hire car you can make your own timetable. You also generally don’t need to worry about additional insurance products such as gap insurance or car warranties when you hire a car.You should not forget, however, the importance of checking your documents so that you know exactly what you are liable for if you have an accident.

Below you will find six of the best and best known sights and attractions that can be seen in New York City.

Central Park. If you seek outdoor stimulation, then the 843 acres of Central Park will surely provide it. People jogging or on bikes can be seen every day making use of the park’s extensive facilities. Here you can visit the Belvedere Castle and enjoy a ride on the Friedsam Carousel. A ticket for the enjoyable Central Park Wildlife Centre will please visitors of all ages as well as allowing free entry to the Tisch Children’s Zoo. In the winter you can ice skate; at any time of the year you can inline skate in the Wollman Rink. It’s possible to rent a boat or race mini yachts at the Conservatory Water. Behind the Met you can enjoy the sun on the Great Lawn or you can wander amidst the marvels of the six acre Conservatory Garden.

Staten Island Ferry. The Staten Island Ferry is a beautiful way to see the New York Skyline and major landmarks. The Statue of Liberty is the first sight after the ferry leaves Manhattan. You get a panoramic view of this vast city, including the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge. A very pleasing aspect of this trip is that it will cost you nothing.

Empire State Building. People all over the world will instantly recognise the Empire State Building. At the time of its opening in 1931 it had cost $41 million to build. It was constructed in less than a year which made it one of the fastest built skyscrapers.
Well worth visiting are the observation desks situated on the 86th and 102nd floors. If the visibility is good, you can see for 80 miles. You can buy a snack or cup of coffee at one of the shops or bars that are inside the building. There is also a thrilling simulated helicopter ride called New York Skyride which will give you a virtual trip around the Big Apple.

Metropolitan Museum of Art. This world famous museum is known to the locals as the Met. It houses over 2 million works of art. Pieces by world renowned artists abound. A wide variety of pieces in all genres, styles and time periods is on display. The Cloisters, which is housed in a separate building, should also be visited. It has one of the most extensive medieval art collections. If you don’t choose to look around this enormous museum by yourself, you can join a guided tour. There is no additional cost for entry to the Cloisters; it’s included in the admission price.

Statue of Liberty. Essential places to see when in New York are the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. This awesome 450,000 pound gift from the French will amaze you. The ferry will take you to the island where you can join a guided tour. The history of the statue and facts about it will be provided by them. In the base of the statue you can find plenty of exhibits and concession stands. Don’t miss the opportunity of seeing wonderful views of the harbour and city from the observation deck. A further possibility is the Lady Liberty New York Helicopter tour.

American Museum of Natural History. The American Museum of Natural History is amongst the largest in the world. Hands-on interactive displays are available in each of 42 separate exhibit halls in this huge place. The extensive collection of fossils here will amaze all those who find dinosaurs interesting. This is a place for the entire family and it will educate and entertain you for hours.

Does anyone ever sleep in this busy city?. Things are going on at all hours of the day and the night. If you want to start exploring this city, make use of the user-friendly public transport system. You could, instead, hire a car. Hiring a vehicle on a short term contract could suit you better if you are going to be in New York for a reasonable period, perhaps on business. But beware! There are often severe penalty clauses in the contract hire lease agreement; early termination, for example, can oblige you to pay as much as 70% of the remaining rental. This is when you would need to look at your car gap policy to see if it includes contract hire gap insurance. You don’t want to be out of pocket if something should happen to write-off your vehicle. In the crazy bustle that is NYC there are 75,000 car accidents every year, so take good care!
